Improved monitoring strategies needed in intermediate high-risk pulmonary embolism patients

Better recognition and research is needed into the optimal method of close monitoring of patients at intermediate high-risk for acute pulmonary embolism (PE), according to a study.

The prospective observational cohort study included a total of 98 patients at intermediate high-risk for PE who were closely monitored throughout their hospital stay. Of these patients, 83% (81 individuals) received close monitoring as per the currently recommended protocols. The frequency of hemodynamic deterioration, the use of rescue reperfusion therapy, and PE-related mortality were tracked as key outcomes.

Three patients experienced hemodynamic deterioration during their hospital stay. In response, 2 of these patients received rescue reperfusion therapy; 1patient who underwent this intervention survived, highlighting the potential life-saving impact of close monitoring and timely intervention.
